Well, I almost made it. You see I bought this bottle of Hoppin’ Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer about 4 years ago, and I wanted to age it for 5. I didn’t quite make it, though, as the temptation got to be too much and I drank it the other night. In case you don’t know, D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer is the bigger, badder, bolder version of Hoppin Frog’s B.O.R.I.S. the Crusher, or “Bodacious Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout".
Of course, if D.O.R.I.S. isn’t big and bold enough for you, you should know that Hoppin’ Frog also offers a barrel aged version of the beer as well. Truth be told, I haven’t seen BORIS or DORIS or any of the other wonderful Hoppin’ Frog beers here in Georgia in some time. It’s not unusual for a brewer to enter a new market, sell a lot of beer to fickle beer geeks there, then pull out to restore demand. Will Hoppin’ Frog return to Georgia? I sure hope so.
From the label:
This extreme Double Oatmeal Russian Imperial Stout will overwhelm, satisfy, and destroy your taste buds like no other!! D.O.R.I.S. is even darker, hoppier, and stronger than our gold medal winning B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher Stout. Dry-hopped and first wort hopped with the finest American hops for a great Imperial Stout experience! Enjoy the darkness!
Hoppin’ Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer has an alcohol content of 10.5% by volmume with 70 IBUs. I paid $10.99 for my bottle about 4 years ago, Total Wine sells it in North Carolina currently for $14.99 a bottle.
Hoppin’ Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer pours to a jet black color with a thick towering head of tan foam and an intoxicating nose of licorice and roasted malts. Taking a sip the beer is thick as crude oil and packed with licorice, deep dark chocolate, coffee with cream, roasted barley and sinfully smooth and silky oats. In the finish, the beer is quite roasty and dry with warming alcohol.
Hoppin’ Frog D.O.R.I.S. the Destroyer is doing well indeed with 4 years of age on it. This one could go even longer I think and still be graceful. I guess I’ll try to find another bottle and try again. Better yet, maybe I’d better buy two or three.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
