Yuengling Hershey's Chocolate Porter

Review Date 10/26/2020 By John Staradumsky

You may not know it, but D.G. Yuengling & Son of Pottsville, Pennsylvania is America’s oldest operating brewery. It’s true. Established in 1829, Yuengling is approaching 200 years of history. Cheers to them for that. I’ve long been a fan of their beers. Mostly their legendary bottom fermented porter. In recent years, a credible Oktoberfest and tasty bock have also been offered.

It is upon their famous porter, however, that Yuengling recently offered what may well be its most popular new beer: Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter. I first heard about this beer a year ago and was quite intrigued. I never did manage to score any, however, as the beer was not distributed to Georgia. Building upon the popularity of the brew last year, however, Yuengling increased the distribution footprint for the fall of 2020, and Georgia was included in that area.

I found Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter at Target. I walked into my local Target, and there it was right in front of me, a large display on an endcap. After I put a six-pack in my cart, a manager came by and asked me if I had tried this before. I replied that I had not, but was looking forward to doing so. He in turn advised that this was a restock of the beer, since they had received 15 cases initially the prior week, and had sold them all by the following Monday.

On their website, Yuengling says:

Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery, and Hershey, America’s most iconic chocolate, are collaborating, for the first time in their history, to provide a once in a lifetime creation for their loyal fans to enjoy. America loves beer and America loves chocolate, so Yuengling and Hershey joined forces to bring the best of both worlds to their fans with a limited-edition Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter.  This collaboration gives consumers the opportunity to savor and indulge in the unique beer from America’s Oldest Brewery and America’s most beloved chocolate brand.

Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter is a fresh take on Yuengling’s 200-year-old Dark Brewed Porter.  Don’t miss your chance to enjoy, for a limited time only, America’s #1 craft brewery, Yuengling, come together with America’s most iconic chocolate brand, Hershey’s, for their first-ever collaboration — Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter.

Hershey and Yuengling are two Pennsylvania icons, two great tastes that taste great together. Yuengling makes it clear on their website that you need to be 21+ to enjoy! This ain’t no Yoohoo chocolate milk here. No, Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter has an alcohol content of 4.7% by volume. I paid $8.54 for my six-pack.

Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter pours to a dark black (but not opaque) color with a thick creamy head and a rich milk chocolate nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, appropriate for a porter, and rich with milk chocolate that permeates a smooth mouthfeel. Powdered cocoa is also abundant, and the beer is gently sweet, not with just a hint of roast in the finish. That lack of balance is quite good though and the sweetness seems apropos to me to accent the chocolate notes. With all that, the beer is not at all cloying.

Nicely done chocolate beer indeed. Compare to Samuel Smith’s Chocolate Stout or Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock. I’ll have to do a side by side with these brews, but based on memory alone, I prefer the Yuengling beer.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
