I’ve been drinking more than a few coffee beers lately, and they have all impressed. From Stone Wizards and Gargoyles (an IPA) to Surly Coffee Bender (a brown ale) to Founders KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge (an imperial stout) to Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast (an oatmeal stout), I have enjoyed each and every one of them. Tonight, I am hitting the coffee beer again, in the form of Two Roads Espressway Cold Brew Coffee Stout.

Two Roads, of Stratford, Connecticut does not distribute to Georgia, but I grabbed this beauty online at Craftshack. The brewery motto is a paraphrase of Robert Frost: Here’s to taking the Road less traveled, in life and in beer! On the can, they present this in cursive, yet another road less traveled these days.

On their website they say this about Espressway:

In a process unique to Two Roads, we mixed a locally-roasted Ethiopian/Sumatra blend of beans with a rich oatmeal stout under pressure (like espresso but without the steam) using our German-built “Brewnik” device. The mixture is steeped for several days resulting in a true, cold-brewed coffee stout. Hop on the Two Roads Espressway!

Two Roads Espressway Cold Brew Coffee Stout has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume and I paid $3.60 for my can from Craftshack. Total Wine sells the beer for $12.99 a six-pack, though not in Georgia. My can is stamped PKG 06NOV20.

Two Roads Espressway Cold Brew Coffee Stout pours to a jet-black color with a prodigious creamy tan head such that I had to continually wait for it to recede, pour some more, then wait again. The nose is heady with coffee grinds. A thick layer of Brussels lace clings to the sides of my glass and follows the liquid all the way to the bottom of my glass. Taking a sip, the beer is medium to full in body, roasty like black coffee with caramel and coffee grind notes mixed with smooth silky oats. Finishes grassy hoppy adding a chicory note, and coffee roasty.

I love the way the caramel pops against the coffee notes here, and I wish I could buy this one here on a regular basis. But then I wish I could get all the wonderful beers that Two Roads brews. They are always, most certainly, brewed on the road less traveled.  

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
