Surly Coffee Bender Brown Ale with Coffee Added

Review Date 1/12/2021   By John Staradumsky

Here’s beer number two (for me) from Minnesota’s Surly Brewing Company: Surly Coffee Bender Brown Ale with Coffee Added. Surly says “Your only dilemma will be whether to finish your day or start it with a coffee bender”. That’s not much of a dilemma for me, as I am not a morning drinker. I’ll enjoy mine in the evening, thank you very much, and so I did.

I do very much enjoy coffee brews, however. Coffee IPAs have started to pop up, but I prefer coffee in a stout, a porter or, as is the case here, a brown ale. The roasted coffee bean flavors just naturally pair well with toasted malts and barley.

Surly says on their website:

Guatemalan coffee, roasted locally, is added to our house oatmeal brown ale. Cold press coffee aromatics and intense coffee flavors are balanced by the oats in the malt bill, resulting in a cappuccino-like creaminess.

They also say:

Aromatic as a bag of fresh roasted beans, Coffee Bender refreshes like an iced coffee and satisfies like your favorite beer. Utilizing the latest technology, the surly brew team has developed a cold extraction process that results in intense coffee aromatics and flavor-bringing together two of our favorite beverages.

Ingredients from the website:

MALT: Pale Ale, Aromatic, Medium Crystal, Dark Crystal, Oats, Chocolate

HOPS: Columbus, Willamette

Surly Coffee Bender Brown Ale with Coffee Added has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume. Surly says the IBU count is “moderate”. I paid $11.99 for four pint cans, and they were packaged on 10/07/20.

Surly Coffee Bender Brown Ale with Coffee Added pours to a dark brown color with a thick creamy tan head and an intense coffee grind nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, nutty and chocolate chip cookiesh as I like an American brown. It is smooth and creamy in the body, and the coffee grinds and a hint of toffee permeate right on into the balanced finish.

So far for me, Surly is batting a thousand.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
