Third Orbit Barrel-Aged Smoked Doppelbock
Review Date 6/1/2024 By John Staradumsky
Round Trip Brewing, I told you I was coming to see you! I had tasted my first Round Trip beer at Taco Mac not long ago (the delightful Dunkel Platz) and that made me want to visit the brewery. So I did! We had a slight mishap along the way unfortunately, my son backed into a pole in the parking garage near the last brewery we visited. We survived, though, and we made the trip to Atlanta and Round Trip.
It is a really cool place, too. I ordered a sampler of four different beers to start, and the first one I tried was the delightful Straight Outta Munich Spezial Helles. I enjoyed a taster of this beer with some very tasty empanadas from a food truck parked outside and it was a perfect match (the Hefeweizen I drank next was too).
Ah, but there was another beer I *really* had my eye on: Third Orbit Barrel-Aged Smoked Doppelbock. I love Doppelbocks more than any other style in the world but hey, smoked beers come in close to the top, too. Combine the two, and age the stuff in bourbon barrels? Oh yeah. I’m all over that. And I was, I had a glass at the brewery and brought home a 4-pack.
Third Orbit Barrel-Aged Smoked Doppelbock has an alcohol content of 11% by volume with 19 IBUs. I paid $7 for an 11-ounce glass at the brewery, and $15 for my four pack of pint cans.
I remarked on Third Orbit Barrel-Aged Smoked Doppelbock at the brewery: Super boozy with bourbon, nutty malty, hint of smoke.
And in the can: hint of smoke, char, nose of char and boozy bourbon, medium to full bodied with notes of toasted nutty malts. Slightly sweet in the finish with more smoke, charcoal. How to classify by style? It's a doppelbock to me, you could call it a rauchbier and not be wrong, but it's more of a doppelbock in my doppelbook.
What a tasty beverage this turned out to be! It was worth the trip to tne brewery for this beer lone and hey, now that I think about it, it was worth the round trip.
Glad I tried it? T
Would I rebuy it??
