Perlenbacher Imperial

Review Date 8/24/2021   By John Staradumsky

Here’s a beer I picked up at Lidl: Perlenbacher Imperial Premium Lager Beer. It was being sold in single half liter bottles, so I grabbed one along with my six-pack of Perlenbacher Hefeweizen. This is a bigger, bolder version of Perlenbacher Premium apparently, which is the flagship of the Perlenbacher line sold at Lidl. I enjoy that beer and it is a good bargain, though truth be told, I do prefer ALDI’s Wernesgruner Pils. There now, are those enough links for you? Get reading!

I cannot tell you much about the beer’s background, except that I paid $2.99 for my bottle. It has an alcohol content of 7.9% by volume, which might make it an Imperial Pilsner if it had more hop character. Instead, its more of a European strong lager, a rather generic category if ever there was one. My bottle is stamped 10/2020 (packaging) and 10/2021 (best by). I drank it on August 19th of 2021.

Perlenbacher Imperial Premium Lager Beer pours to a slightly hazy color with a moderate head formation and a nose of biscuit and a hint of toasted malt. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth malty and a bit harshly strong with alcohol. It’s balanced with a touch of herbal hops and alcohol warmth. Not the best German beer you can find, but at $2.99 a bottle not a lot invested, either. Still, not a beer I would buy again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
