Perlenbacher Premium Pilsner

Review Date 9/6/2019 By John Staradumsky

We all love our craft beer, but let's be fair: not everyone can afford craft beer. Prices seem to be going up and up and up every time we make a trip to the store. Still, that doesn't mean you have to drink bad beer. Those who read my reviews on a regular basis will know I'm a big fan of Wernesgruner Pils, sold at Aldi and a steal at $6.99 a six-pack of 11.2 ounce bottles.

Aldi, of course, is a German discount grocery chain with locations across the United States. Recently, Aldi got some competition here in America from Lidl, another German grocer with aspirations to grow in the USA. Lidl opened a few stores here in Georgia this year, and I stopped by one this week.

While I was there, and from a distance, I spied a display of Perlenbacher Premium Pilsner, imported from Germany. At $9.99 a six, it seemed higher in price than the Wernesgruner-until you get closer and see this a six-pack of half liter bottles!

There’s not a lot of information available about Perlenbacher Premium Pilsner. There are a few other styles available under this brand. Perlenbacher Premium Pilsner has an alcohol content of 4.9% by volume and is a product of Germany.

Let’s look at the pricing. Wernesgruner, at $6.99 for 67.2 ounces runs 10.4 cents per ounce. Perlenbacher comes in at just a little less, $9.99 for 101.4 ounces or 9.9 cents per ounce.

Perlenbacher Premium Pilsner pours to a pale golden color with a thick fluffy white head and a fresh biscuity malt nose. Taking a sip, the beer is crisp malty up front with earthy, perfumey herbal hops permeating. It finishes balancing to lingeringly bitter, with even more earthy hop aroma.

This is a decent German pilsner at a bargain basement price. Quality wise, I prefer the Wernesgruner, but this is tasty too, and a much better deal than a domestic megabrew. It’s worth trying on its own merits for sure, even if you’re not short on dough.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
