Fistful of Cake German Chocolate Imperial Stout

Review Date 2/7/2020    By John Staradumsky

Last April, I had a Monday Night Fistful of Cake Opera Cake-Style Coffee Vanilla Imperial Stout, and boy was it tasty. The beer, part of Monday Bight’s Black Tie series of beers, was also the first in the Fistful of Cake series. A bit later in the year, the second release emerged: Fistful of Cake Chocolate Orange Imperial Stout, made with cocoa nibs, freshly-peeled orange zest and Vietnamese cinnamon. That one sounds even better than the first one, but I never saw it anywhere. Fear not-I’m still looking!

Here I am at Taco Mac, though, drinking the third release: Monday Night Fistful of Cake German Chocolate Imperial Stout. I love German Chocolate Cake, so this stands to be the one to beat, and I was very much looking forward to it. Glad I found it on tap at Taco Mac.

Monday Night says:

The third in our Fistful of Cake series, this beer was inspired by the classic German chocolate cake. A rich and roasty base is enhanced by toasted coconut and Ugandan vanilla beans. Grab this cake when you can, because once it's gone....you know the rest.

Monday Night Fistful of Cake German Chocolate Imperial Stout has an alcohol content of 9% by volume with 45 IBUs. I paid $7.25 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac, which I find reasonable; it runs $15.99 a 4-pack of pint cans at Total Wine, which I do not find reasonable.

My glass of Monday Night Fistful of Cake German Chocolate Imperial Stout arrived jet black in color with a fair sized head of tightly packed tan foam. The nose is roasty and chocolaty with hints of coconut, more of the dark chocolate comes through in the smooth full dark chocolaty palate, toasty coconut pops through, a soft hint of vanilla, and a roasty warming alcohol finish.

Not reminding me of German Chocolate Cake really (the pecans in the frosting are missing for one thing), but this beer is tasty all the same. I’ll peg at 4 stars overall less ½ star for the missing pecans and the high price in cans.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
