Hazy Big Swell IPA

Review Date 7/30/2021    By John Staradumsky

If you don’t know already, I’ve been addicted to Maui Brewing Company ever since we went to Maui. We loved the beers at the brewery, and I always make sure to have a few Maui brews around the house ever since. The first Maui beer ever to pass these lips was Maui Big Swell IPA; I enjoyed a draft glass as soon as we made it to the hotel from OGG.

Tonight, I’m here to tell you about another beer that’s big and swell: Maui Hazy Big Swell IPA. It’s a hazy New England style take on Maui’s flagship IPA. Maui says on the can label:

We’re stoked for you to try this fresh, full bodied hazy rendition of our flagship IPA! Double dry hopped with Citra, Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, this aromatic island IPA is bursting with grapefruit, pine, and tropical fruit character.

Maui Hazy Big Swell IPA has an alcohol content of 6.8% by volume (just like the original) and I paid $3.60 for my can from Craftshack. That’s not much more than the $9.99 a 4-pack Total Wine sells it for (but not in Georgia).

Maui Hazy Big Swell IPA pours to a densely hazy yellow color with a thick rocky head of foam and a nose bursting with tropical pineapple and passion fruit. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and very juicy with more of the pineapple the nose promised, grapefruit pith and peel, a hint of resiny pine, and a dry bitter finish. A very tasty beer indeed, and one I would love to be sipping on a Maui beach right now.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
