Hey there, Yee Haw Brewing of Johnson City, Tennessee! You’re batting 1000 in my book. The first Yee Haw beer I tried, Yee Haw Dunkel, was a tasty beer indeed, and I think I like the brew I’m sipping currently, Yee Haw Winter Porter, even better! I picked up a single at Wile Hare Beer Company, and now I wish I had picked up a six-pack.
I’m told that this beer, Yee Haw’s winter seasonal, doesn’t hang around long. It gets snapped up off store shelves by thirsty customers quickly, and I can see why. Yee Haw says on the label:
English porter meets Schwarzbier, our Baltic-inspired Winter Porter is the best of so many worlds. A true lager that is complex, smooth and malt-forward with hints of black currant and dark fruit. All of this complemented by a touch of Madagascar vanilla. For a beer to warm you right up, just say...Yee-Haw!
So, this is a bottom fermented Baltic porter in style, one you won’t often see from craft brewers these days. Yee Haw Winter Porter has an alcohol content of 6% by volume with 20 IBUs. It was running $9.99 a six-pack at Wild Hare.
Yee Haw Winter Porter pours to a jet-black color with a thick creamy tan head and a luscious chocolate roast and vanilla nose. Taking a sip, the beer is wonderfully smooth in the palate, full bodied and rich with chocolate and heavy roasty notes. All that is underlined by a delightful creamy vanilla note, and the roast remerges in the finish to balance the beer perfectly.
What a treat, smooth but clean, roasty and full bodied, nicely balanced with a hint of vanilla. I don’t get the fruit they speak of, and really shouldn’t in a lager. I’ll be back for more of this one folks!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
