I've
drunk a great many beers in my time, but not many from the state of Florida.
There aren't a large number of microbreweries in that state, and those that do
exist don't seem to distribute very far. I received this particular beer through
a beer club shipment. Ybor City Brewing has been around since 1994 and brews
around 15,000 barrels a year. They're hoping to do more in the future (but what
brewery isn't).
This beer has a deep golden color, a huge foamy head and a floral hoppy nose.
The palate is smooth and clean, firm malty and slightly crisp. There's a faint
touch of butter that might be appropriate in a pilsner, but not in a Dortmunder
Export which this brew is supposed to be. It's not enough of a distraction to
keep this from being a very fine brew however. The finish features a touch of
floral, perfumy hops and a lingering hop bitterness. The combination of
assertive malt and hops here is appropriate for a Dortmunder.
I'm sipping this beer by itself on a hot summer evening, it's perfect for that
but would be a refreshing accompaniment to lighter fare like chicken, turkey, or
a caesar salad.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
