Well how about this? Yazoo Brewing of Nashville, Tennessee is back with another Winter Ale, and it’s quite a bit different from the one I had three years ago. In February of 2015, the wife and I journeyed to Nashville just in time to find Yazoo Winter Ale on store shelves. That year it was a Scottish ale, and a tasty one.
This time around, Yazoo is calling their winter seasonal release Red House Ale. Red House Red IPA is a limited release offering by Yazoo, and it appears for 2017 they have repackaged it as Yazoo Winter Ale, though the label on my bottle clearly calls this Red House Ale, too.
Of Red House IPA Yazoo says:
Red House Ale is a West Coast Red IPA. Made with a variety of hops from Washington State, including Columbus and Centennial for a full flavor and aroma.
There are no specs listed Red House IPA, but the labels are pretty much the same. Of Yazoo winter Ale Red House Ale, from the label:
A full-bodied hoppy red ale, bringing together hops from Yakima and inspiration from the Mississippi Delta. It’s our tribute to the artists and ingredients that come together in the most unlikely places and situations to create something unique.
Yazoo Winter Ale Red House Ale has an alcohol content of 7% by volume with 68 IBUs. It runs $9.99 a six-pack at Kroger in Spring Hill.
Yazoo Winter Seasonal Red House Ale pours to a dark reddish, almost brown color with a thick rocky tan head of foam and a robust nose of citrus and berry fruits. Taking a sip, the beer has hints of chocolate, stone fruits, berry fruits, green olives, citrus and a very bitter grassy hop bitterness. A wonderful hoppy red ale, bursting with stewed malt goodness, reminds me of Gritty McDuff’s Christmas Ale. Interesting, that, since the Scottish reminded me of Gritty’s Scottish Ale. A fine compliment indeed, too. Something about the malts is quite similar.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
