I picked up another beer in Nashville from one of my very favorite (if not favorite) Tennessee breweries: Yazoo. If memory serves, the very first Yazoo beer that I enjoyed was Dos Perros Ale at The Flying Saucer back in 2008. Tonight, I’m here to tell you about Yazoo Hopry IPA, but before I tell you about Yazoo Hopry IPA, I think I’ll let Yazoo tell you about Yazoo Hopry IPA. From the label:
Hoppy times are here again! “Raise the cap” on this bad boy and let the hoppiness wash over your tongue. Yazoo Hopry is an unabashedly hoppy, aromatic, and bitter beer, brewed with malted pale, rye, Vienna, wheat, and oats. The hops take center stage though, with high notes from Nugget, Amarillo, Chinook, and Columbus Varietals.
On the Yazoo website they call this a “double IPA”, though at 7.2% by volume it does not seem strong enough for that. It runs about $9.99 a six-pack at Kroger in Spring Hill, TN, where I bought mine.
Yazoo Hopry IPA pours to an amber orange color with a citrusy, herbal hop nose and a thick head of white foam. Taking a sip, the beer has a big caramel malt presence and a touch of buttery diacetyl (I love that). The hops are wonderfully grapefruit citrusy in a rind and juicy flesh way with a sharp, deep, long dry slightly herbal bitterness punctuating the beer wonderfully.
Well done indeed, classic American IPA with malt (remember malt?) and an intense bitterness and citrus peel character. This is yet another triumph from Yazoo, and yeah, upon reflection with Yazoo Hopry IPA they may well just be my favorite Tennessee brewer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
