Father’s Day! That’s always a special occasion. My kids know what I like, so they took me to Atlanta’s Little Five Points section for a pub crawl. A brewpub (The Wrecking Bar), a famous restaurant/bar (The Vortex), and a renowned beer bar (The Porter) all within a short walk from each other. With no parking available in the immediate vicinity (actually there was as we found out later), we parked about a mile away on Krog Street and walked about a mile in the warm June sun to the Wrecking Bar, our first stop.
I enjoyed a number of delicious beers here, but one of my favorites was Choco Mountain Imperial Breakfast Stout. Here's what the Wrecking Bar says about the beer:
Flavors of bittersweet dark chocolate, mocha, dark fruits, and smoothness from oats and wheat all come to play in this decadent strong ale. Sumatran coffee beans, maple syrup and dark chocolate were used in our hopback to take this beer to the next level. As if that weren't enough, we finished this unique brew with our signature Guatemalan Antigua cold-press coffee recipe, generally reserved for the Jemmy Dean, and infused the beer with a half-gallon per barrel.
This is a formidable beer at 9% alcohol by volume and 75 IBUs. I got a 4 ounce glass for $3 but its also sold in an 8-ounce glass for exactly twice the price. Again, I like the smaller servings you can buy at the Wrecking Bar.
My glass of The Wrecking Bar Choco Mountain Imperial Breakfast Stout arrived a jet black color with a thin creamy tan head and an intense coffee grind nose. Taking a sip those coffee grind notes roar to the fore in the palate, intertwined with the thick viscous mouthfeel and notes of chocolate, intense roast, and a dry roasty finish.
Does the Wrecking Bar do anything by half measures? Not from my experience. What a truly wonderful beer this is my friends.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
