Father’s Day! That’s always a special occasion. My kids know what I like, so they took me to Atlanta’s Little Five Points section for a pub crawl. A brewpub (The Wrecking Bar), a famous restaurant/bar (The Vortex), and a renowned beer bar (The Porter) all within a short walk from each other. With no parking available in the immediate vicinity (actually there was as we found out later), we parked about a mile away on Krog Street and walked about a mile in the warm June sun to the Wrecking Bar, our first stop.
One of the most interesting beers I enjoyed here (and I enjoyed a few) was Wrecking Bar Cask Neopolitan Porter, a variation on their classic Sow Your Wild Oatmeal Porter.
Here’s how The Wrecking Bar describes Sow Your Wild Oatmeal Porter:
For those that want a beer with complex malt flavors, but not the extra roasty flavors of a stout, our Oatmeal Porter is your beer. This Porter contains prominent notes of chocolate, biscuits and dark fruit and smoothness from a big portion of flaked oats. Just enough English hops to balance.
Of course, Wrecking Bar Cask Neopolitan Porter is a little different than that. Here's how different:
Our Sow Your Wild Oatmeal Porter cask conditioned with vanilla bean, strawberries & organic cocoa nibs then pulled from the Cellar using an old English beer engine.
They had me at beer engine.
Wrecking Bar Cask Neopolitan Porter has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with 35 IBUs. I paid $3.25 for an 8-ounce glass. I do like that the Wrecking Bar offers smaller glasses allowing you to try more of their beers.
My glass of Wrecking Bar Cask Neopolitan Porter arrived jet black in color with a thick creamy head and rich vanilla, berries and roast in the nose. Taking a sip the beer had the smooth texture of a cask ale with moderate carbonation and the silky palate that oats impart. Beyond, that though, it's amazing how the beer gave the impression of Neapolitan ice cream. You really get the milk chocolate, the bright fruity berries and creamy vanilla, just like the ice cream. A liquid chocolate dipped strawberry also came to mind.
Wow, just wow was all I could think while enjoying this treat. Really and truly the perfect dessert beer.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
