Father’s Day! That’s always a special occasion. My kids know what I like, so they took me to Atlanta’s Little Five Points section for a pub crawl. A brewpub (The Wrecking Bar), a famous restaurant/bar (The Vortex), and a renowned beer bar (The Porter) all within a short walk from each other. With no parking available in the immediate vicinity (actually there was as we found out later), we parked about a mile away on Krog Street and walked about a mile in the warm June sun to the Wrecking Bar, our first stop.
As it turned out, that set the stage perfectly for Another Brick Berliner Weisse, a refreshing, quenching, tart and acidic Berliner Weisse style beer from the Wrecking Bar. I love these refreshing German-style wheat beers and my son found it equally delightful as well. A style traditionally low in alcohol, you can quaff a pint too without too much ill effect.
Here’s how The Wrecking Bar describes the beer:
“...in the wall” Berlin Wall. In 1809, Napoleon's Army referred to Berliner Weisse as “the Champagne of the North”, a specialty of the Berlin area, and today is often consumed with himbeer (raspberry) or waldmeister (green) syrup added. Ours has a lightly tart, wheat grain aroma and more in the flavor. The pH ended up around 3.2, making it pretty tart but still refreshing and true to style.
The Wrecking Bar Another Brick Berliner Weisse has an alcohol content of 4% by volume, about one percent or so higher than the classic German examples. It has just 4 IBUs and was a steal at just $3.75 a pint. Gotta love that!
My pint of The Wrecking Bar Another Brick Berliner Weisse arrived a pale yellow color with a short-lived fizzy head formation and very tart and sour dry appetizing nose. Taking a sip, the beer has crackery wheat underneath, but you don’t get to appreciate it for long before the massive sourness and tartness arrive; they define the beer. The beer ends with a puckering dry acidic finish.
This is a great example of the style at a great price, a perfect beer to enjoy after walking about Little Five Points.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
