The term “American Pilsner” made me cringe when I noticed it on the can, as thoughts of lightly hopped beer laden with corn and rice adjuncts came to mind. Never fear, for this beer from Wiseacre in Memphis is nothing like that. Instead, it’s simply an “American” take on a classic European style. Here’s how the brewery explains it on their website:
Boom! The soft waters of Pilsen. Czech Republic birthed this classic style centuries ago & the waters from the Artesian wells in Memphis are perfect to create our own version today. Pow! This beer made is made with German & American pilsner malt and is spiked with 50lbs. of local wildflower honey. There are delicate aromas of sugar & clover wafting forth from this crisp, smooth Pale Lager. Shazam!
Wiseacre Tiny Bomb American Pilsner has an alcohol content of 4.5% by volume with 35 IBUs. It’s made with German Pilsner Malt, Mt. Hood and Bravo hops and fermented with a German lager yeast strain. It was running $8.99 a six-pack in Spring Hill, TN.
Wiseacre Tiny Bomb American Pilsner pours to a pale golden color with a thick creamy head and a faint biscuit malt nose. Taking a sip, the beer has that same crisp biscuit malt underneath and not much else before it culminates in a more than balancing grassy herbal and lingering bitter finish. As I said, this is not what I think of as American pilsner-it’s better. I didn’t really get much from the honey though it may be adding a bit more richness to the body.
Wiseacre Tiny Bomb American Pilsner is an easy drinking, solid pilsner perfect for warm weather imbibing.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
