I was at Taco Mac, to begin with. If you read my reviews on anything approaching a regular basis, you will know there is nothing unusual about that. Today, though, I was at a different Taco Mac on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta. This location is near my office, and that meant I was driving home. Normally, I go to my local Canton store for a few beers, and that one is close enough to walk or take Lyft to get to.
Tonight, though, I was a bit more conscious about what I was drinking, so when I saw Wild Heaven Bestie Pub Ale on the draft menu, I knew that was the way to go. This is a true session style ale in the English tradition with enough flavor to make it interesting and enjoyable but not so much alcohol that it will weigh you down.
Wild Heaven says:
Bestie is a delicious session Pub Ale brewed in collaboration with England’s Arundel Brewery, Wild Heaven Beer and Robert Merrick of Atlanta’s 9 Mile Station. Built on the backbone of a traditional Standard Pub Ale with our own twist added, Bestie is designed to be a flavor-forward, yet easy-drinking beer. It is medium amber in color with light hints of peat and dark fruits and finishes crisp and clean with lingering floral hops.
Wild Heaven Bestie Pub Ale has an alcohol content of just 3.9% by volume, just under the 4% limit for a true session ale. I paid $4.75 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac and it runs $10.44 a six-pack in cans at Target.
My mug of Wild Heaven Bestie Pub Ale arrived a beautiful amber color with a light creamy head and a soft maltiness in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer is smooth and easy drinking with bready malts in the palate, a gentle suggestion of fruit and a lightly floral hop finish with a gentle balancing bitterness.
I very much enjoyed this beer, perfect for sipping in the pub but also for warm spring afternoons as well. A session beer that really is a session beer, and the draft price is a steal. Thanks, Wild Heaven!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
