95 Shilling Imperial Scotch Ale Aged in Bulleit 95 Rye Barrels

Review Date 2/2/2022 By John Staradumsky

Not so long ago, I goofed. I was at Total Wine, you see, and I picked up a single can of Line Creek Jailhouse Breakout Stout. That beer was based on a beloved old beer of mine from a beloved (and now defunct) Georgia brewery, and I should have got a 4-pack. I fixed that though in January, on a return visit to Total Wine. I bought the 4-pack I should have on my prior visit, and all was well.

Except, you see, I did it again. This time it was with a can of Wild Heaven 95 Shilling Imperial Scotch Ale Aged in Bulleit 95 Rye Barrels. There were a few reason that I only bought the single pint can, first of which was the price. This beer was running $18.99 a 4-pack, a hefty toll indeed. Then too, though I have long been a fan of Wild Heaven, the past few beers I have bought from them have been underwhelming.

That was not the case this time, I can safely tell you now. Wild Heaven 95 Shilling Imperial Scotch Ale Aged in Bulleit 95 Rye Barrels has an alcohol content of 9% by volume.

Ingredients from the website:

Hops: East Kent Goldings

Malts: Baird's Speyside Scottish Malt, Baird's Caramel Malt 35L, Bestmalz Munich, Bestmalz Special X, Baird's Roasted Barley

They say:

The first of two very limited releases in our partnership with Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, 95 Shilling is an Imperial Scotch Ale aged in Bulleit 95 Rye barrels.

I say:

Wild Heaven 95 Shilling Imperial Scotch Ale Aged in Bulleit 95 Rye Barrels pours to a deep mahogany color with a creamy eggshell head and a nose of toffee, butterscotch, and whiskey. Taking a sip, the beer is full in body, luxuriant as it rolls around on the tongue. Treacle and butter scotch immediately come through, then dark fruity raisin, and boozy bourbon notes that seriously permeate into the (again) boozy finish replete with warming alcohol.

This is just an amazing beer, the deep burn of Scotch runs throughout and makes this a sipper. The price of admission is high, yes, but this one can back it up, and folks, I am going back for more.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
