Here’s a beer I haven’t had in a while: Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA. The last time I had a refreshing Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA I was at Taco Mac, July 20th 2013, and a draft mug of this beer just happened to be my Brewniversity credit number 400. Not bad at a mere six bucks, and I know I enjoyed it as I usually do with Weyerbacher beers.
Of course, there’s a better reason than usual to enjoy Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA: a portion of the proceeds is donated by Weyerbacher to animal rescue organizations. In fact, according to the Weyerbacher website they have donated over $50,000 to such charities since 2012 (Last Chance IPA was launched in May of that year). That’s amazing, and a great reason to support this beer and brewer!
Did I mention you’ll get some great beer in the bargain? You will. Weyerbacher says the following about Last Chance IPA on their website:
Weyerbacher’s Last Chance IPA is a west coast-style full-flavored hop assault delightfully lacking in balance. We’ve added a combination of Centennial, Cascade, Simcoe and Columbus hops are used to produce pungent aromas of grapefruit, pine and citrus.
Weyerbacher last Chance IPA runs about $9.99 a six-pack at Total Wine here in Georgia. That’s a bit above normal, but I am fine with that given the amount of money Weyerbacher has donated. The beer has 62 IBUs and an alcohol content of 5.9% by volume.
Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA pours to a bright orange color with a medium sized foamy head and an appetizing mint and resin hop nose. Taking a sip, I realize right away I want more malt. There’s a little caramel underneath, folks, but Weyerbacher is going for this “West Coast IPA” business here, and the malt is way out of balance with the hops. They sneak up quickly, very resiny, a little grapefruity, and minty herbal especially in the long dry finish. Very good despite the imbalance, dry and refreshing and for a good cause. 4 stars normally, with a full star bonus for the good cause.
How can you go wrong with this one? You can’t, so be sure to pick some up.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
