Low and Slow Doppelbock

Westbrook has a doppelbock! That should not be a surprise, of course, as Westbrook of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina brews lots of great beers in lots of great styles. Doppelbock, though, is my very favorite style of beer, so when I spied a single can of Westbrook Low and Slow Doppelbock on the shelf at Total Wine, I grabbed it. It was the very last one, and I could not find the beer in 4-packs, either.

Westbrook says about the beer:

Intensely rich and malty with a touch of noble Hallertau Mittelfruh hops to balance out the sweetness. Lagered in horizontal tanks for 4 months for extra smoothness and complexity.

Low and Slow Doppelbock has an alcohol content of 8.2% by volume according to the label on my can. There was no freshness dating on it, but it tasted fresh to me. This is a style that can handle a little age, after all. I paid $4.49 for my can; the Total Wine website lists at $11.49 a 4-pack. In definitely would have paid the extra seven bucks for three more cans had they had them.

Westbrook Low and Slow Doppelbock pours to a deep chestnut color with a light to medium fluffy tan head and a nose of luscious toasty nutty malts. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and rich malty. It’s toasty nutty and hints at molasses and complex melanoidin Munich malt goodness. It finishes sweet and sticky with just a hint of hop bitterness attempting to balance off the sweet chewy malt.

A credible doppelbock in my opinion, and one I would love to find more of. Perhaps on tap at Taco Mac?

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
