Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050

Review Date 3/31/2021   By John Staradumsky

I can picture it in my mind’s eye. Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of Control, is seated in a German Biergarten. He’s there on a mission to track down an agent of Kaos, but he’s taking a break from the action and enjoying a stein of Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050. Max lifts the mug to his lips, takes a long, satisfying pull, then lowers it and exclaims “Missed it by that much!”.

Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050 is named for the year beer was first brewed at the Weltenburger Kloster. In fact, Weltenburger is the second oldest operating brewery in the world. Only Weihenstephaner, also in Germany, also in Germany, is older, dating to 1040. Hence Max’s whimsical pondering.

Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050 is a Marzen by style, and a very good one at that. Of the beer the brewery says:

Das goldene Märzen: Vollmundig, kräftig, malzig! Feine Karamellnoten und angenehm-milde Hopfenbittere! Ein wahres Genusserlebnis!

Which means if you don’t speak German:

A golden Märzen: full-bodied, strong, malty! Fine caramel notes and pleasantly mild hop bitterness! A true pleasure experience!

Ingredients from the website:

Hops: Herkules, Perle, Tradition

Malts: Helles Gerstenmalz, dunkles Gerstenmalz

Gerstenmalz is German for barley malt.

Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050 has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume and will cost you around $13.99 a six-pack at Total Wine.

Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050 pours to a beautiful clear amber color with a thick fluffy white head and a luscious aroma of caramel and toasted malts. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body with delightful toasty nutty melanoidin notes and caramel. The beer finishes gently bitter with a grassy hop buzz, but only gently bitter.

Delightful!

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
