Beware. This is a dangerous brew. Good German-style Maibocks are hard to come by in America, but Victory's version is so tasty that you might be tempted to drink it in mass quantities. At close to 8% ABV, however, this could be dangerous (at least as far as the next day is concerned.)
In any case, this is a first rate Maibock. I remember many years ago drinking fresh, sweet and malty Wurzburger Maibock, and St. Boisterous is virtually identical to my recollections of that incredible brew. The exclusive use of German malts is a good reason for this. This brew pours to a rich golden color, St. Boisterous is a thick, syrupy brew with virtually no head. The nose is all malt, as is the palate, sweet, rich, and slightly warming. A balancing hop finish keeps the beer from being overly cloying. I have enjoyed this beer both on draught at the brewery and in bottles. I did notice a touch of DMS in the bottled version, but only at threshold-perception levels. A world-class brew!
From
the brewery website:
This style was designed to help combat the chill of early season beer garden enjoyment. Considered a Maibock (’Mai’ is May in German) in Germany, this lovely style is as fleeting as early spring flowers.
Hops: Tettnang and Hallertauer Saphir whole flower German hops
ABV: 7.5%
Brewed of decocted German malts and noble German hops, St. Boisterous is lagered long and cold to emerge smooth and seductive, with a malty sweet charm and exuberant, robust character.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
