Second beer of vacation! That’s what Valley River Brewery Strawberry Berliner Weisse was. We were taking a vacation in the Carolinas, visiting both Harrah’s casinos and then off to Charleston for a few days there. First stop was Harrah’s in Murphy, North Carolina, and of course that meant a stop (my second visit) at Valley River Brewery. I wanted to get a growler fill to take back to the hotel (I did: Valley River Hanging Dog Double IPA).
While I waited, though, I got a couple of half pints at the bar. I like that you can do that here, and that they are exactly half the price of a pint. The first beer I enjoyed on this trip was here as well, and it was Konehete Golden Ale. The Berliner Weisse intrigued and became beer two.
Valley River Brewery Strawberry Berliner Weisse has an alcohol content of 4.1% by volume. I paid $2.25 for a half pint-what a deal! You could fill a 64-ounce growler for $14.95. The beer was brewed in conjunction with Innovation Brewery in Sylvia and with fresh strawberries from SMM farms.
My glass of Valley River Brewery Strawberry Berliner Weisse arrived a beautiful rose tinted amber in color with a very tart dry fruity nose, tart wheat in the palate and fresh berry fruit all leading to a puckering sour finish. This is very good, a lot like that strawberry picked a little too soon that’s not sweet but sour. The fruit complements the beer here and does not overpower it, so to me this remains a Berliner Weisse in style and does not devolve into a fruit beer.
I have never had a bad beer at Valley River Brewery, and as I type, we’re getting ready for another trip to Murphy in two days. I just can’t wait to stop by Valley River Brewery again….
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
