Holy Roller Hazy Juicy IPA

Review Date 5/29/2021 By John Staradumsky

Here’s beer two for me from New Orleans Urban South brewery. As I did with the first, Who Dat Golden Ale, I got a can of Holy Roller Hazy Juicy IPA from Craftshack.com. Urban South breweries are not yet sold in Georgia, but I suspect they will be at some point. Louisiana is only a few states away, and we recently began to see beers from Parish Brewing here.

Holy Roller is, as they say, a hazy juicy IPA in the New England vein, a style with a dotted line to modern West Coast IPA (not to be confused with classic West Coast IPA/American IPA). Urban South says on their website:

To every thing there is a season. A time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to plant and a time to reap. But in the Urban South, our seasons run together. Here, parishioners cycle between pew and barstool. The tippler duets with the street preacher. And last night’s carousers become today’s congregation, still dressed in their finest. Holy Roller is a big, bold IPA for all of us caught between best intentions and bad behavior. It’s for the golden moment between Saturday night sins and Sunday’s repentance. It’s for life lived in full. For every season, there is a beer. We call it Holy Roller.

Urban South Holy Roller Hazy Juicy IPA has an alcohol content of 6.3% by volume with 60 IBUs and I paid $4.56 for my can from Craftshack. If you live in Louisiana, Total Wine sells this beer for a bargain price of $8.99 a six-pack. My can is stamped PKG ON 12/08/20 and I drank it on April 22nd of 2021.

Urban South Holy Roller Hazy Juicy IPA pours to a hazy yellow color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose bursting with fresh juicy citrusy orange and tropical pineapple. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body and again very juicy. Juicy orange and tangerine, pineapple, and mango and a balanced slightly bitter finish are all present. Very drinkable, very juicy but I would like a little more bitterness.

Definitely a beer I would like to enjoy again, perhaps on tap at the brewery?

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
