Urban Chestnut beers don’t make their way to Georgia very often (I have seen them here once actually), so when I get a chance to pick them up, I usually do. The brewery features German style brews, and so far all of the ones I have tried from them have been in that vein. Which is good, because German beer and German style beer is my favorite beer in all the world.

Enter Urban Chestnut O-Katz (Oachkatzlschwoaf) Oktoberfest Lager. Yet another well-done German style lager from this Saint Louis, Missouri brewer. Before I speak to the beer itself, I’m sure you’re wondering bout the name of the beer. From the can label:

This malty yet well balanced Märzen-style lager is easy to drink but difficult to pronounce. That’s why Oachkatzlschwoaf (“owah-kaatzl-sch-woaff”) is lovingly referred to as “O-Katz” by our staff…because only our Bavarian-born Brewmaster can pronounce it correctly. We all agree Bavarian humor can be…interesting! Prost!

Why do they speak of Bavarian humor? Because Oachkatzlschwoaf is slang ofr squirrel’s tail, and, one presumes, the name derives from the fact the beer has a similar color.

Urban Chestnut O-Katz (Oachkatzlschwoaf) Oktoberfest Lager has an alcohol content of 5.4% by volume and I paid $4.24 for my can from Craftshack. Total Wine sells it for $8.49 for a 4-pack of pint cans, which is a very good price these days. My can has no freshness dating.

Urban Chestnut O-Katz (Oachkatzlschwoaf) Oktoberfest Lager pours to a brilliant amber color with a medium head of foam and a nose of toasty nutty malt goodness. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body, bready, and packed with a toasty nutty malty goodness. There’s a balancing herbal hop bitterness that lingers for a bit after sipping.

A tasty Märzen with a funny name, and a beer I would certainly buy again.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
