Guest Video Review by Tom The Beer Whisperer
An Open Letter to Urban Chestnut:
Dear Urban Chestnut,
You’re back on track and on top of things with your Kudamm Berliner Weisse! I just loved your Bap Kolsch Ale, and your Oxnbrau Doppelbock too. I’m a big fan of German style beers you see, they’re my very favorite of all. And you guys seem to know your German beer! OK, but keeping it real, then I tried a bottle of your Maximillian Weizenbock, and it just didn’t do it for me. Oh, it wasn’t a bad beer mind you, but it didn’t sing Uns! Zwa! Drei! G’suffa! The way say, Aventinus does.
Recently, though, I popped a bottle of the Kudamm, and all was right again in Urban Chestnut land. OK, it may be a little strong for a Berliner Weisse at 4.2% (the German ones I’ve tried run between 2.5% to 3%), but it was tasty and delicious and had all the character a good Berliner Weisse should. While I was drinking it, I read the label:
Drink it ‘straight’ to appreciate the light tartness…Or repeat these words “Ich bin ein Berliner” and add a bit of elderflower, blackberry, or plum syrup just as they do along Kurfürstendamm.
Now, I must confess that not being a jelly donut, I can’t repeat those words you asked me to, so while drinking I just said Ich komme aus Berlin instead. As I drank some more, I really appreciated the fact you used classic ingredients like Hallertau Tradition hops and German Pilsner, German Wheat, and German Sour malts. Thanks for that!
I do wish that you sold your beers here in Georgia, because I would love to buy them and drink them more often. For now, good old Tom The Beer Whisperer Mulvihill (that’s him in the video above) whom you know so well is my mule. He’s your ambassador too!
Well, enough of all that, time to finish the Kudamm beer.
Urban Chestnut Kudamm Berliner Weisse pours to a pale yellow color with a tiny thin filmy head of foam and an appetizing dry sour nose. Taking a sip, the beer is tart wheaty up front, then tarter still with a refreshing dry sourness in the finish. It’s not puckering sour like the German examples I know and love, but it’s pretty close and very tasty indeed. It’s a perfect beer for a hot 90-degree Georgia September night.
What a great little beer here, and the 16.9 ounce bottles are a big plus too. Who wants just 12-ounces of refreshing Berliner Weisse? Well, thanks again Urban Chestnut and for batting 3 for 4 with me so far.
Yours truly,
The Bruguru
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
