Oh how I love a good foreign stout! Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is the classic example, but there are other delicious ones as well, some even from the United States. Welcome back! I hope you’ve found a few new beers that you’re going to go looking for shortly. Why I myself am trying a new one myself tonight, that being Uplsope Foreign Style Stout. This isn’t a beer sold here in Georgia, but I have a connection in Colorado (Dale Roberts) who mules me Upslope beers to try.
Upslope cans all their stuff, which is neat of course. They say this about their Foreign Style Stout on their website:
Full bodied, black, roasted, and exceptionally smooth, this was our first anniversary beer and our first limited can release. Finishes neither sweet nor dry, it is wonderfully balanced, making it perfect for stout lovers and stout newbies.
This is a very limited release, so I’m in turn very grateful to Dale for sharing. My can has a best before date of March 20th stamped on the bottom, but I didn’t drink it until early August. Dale, of course, sent it well before that time, it just sat in my beer fridge for a little while before I drank it. That should be (and was here) no problem for a foreign stout.
Uplsope Foreign Style Stout has an alcohol content of 6.9% by volume with 28 IBUs. The cans say it’s made from snowmelt, malt, Patagonian hops, Irish ale yeast, and roasted barley.
Uplsope Foreign Style Stout pours to a jet black color with a thick creamy tan head and a luxurious licorice nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a medium body but thick waves of bittersweet dark chocolate and loads of licorice just as I want in the style. Powdered cocoa is apparent too, but not the dark fruity raisin I want. I might like more body here, too, but just a little more mind you.
All in all though this is a tasty brew indeed and one I would certainly buy again if I came across it.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
