I went to rent a Liam Neeson movie the other night, but it was Taken. OK, I thought, I’ll get the sequel but that wasTaken 2. When would they be back in stock? Unknown. Who knows, maybe Neeson was out with The Unknown Comic, having a beer from his favorite brewery (I think): The Unknown Brewing Company of Charlotte, North Carolina.

OK, my little play on the name of this brewery aside, I must say that that name is a little unorthodox, but at the same time rather creative. I was thinking about this as I sipped on Unknown Silverback American Stout, the second beer I’ve enjoyed from Unknown, and really, they’re 2 for 2 so far. Since they now sell their beer in Georgia (have since earlier in 2016), this won’t be my last for sure.

If you’re wondering about how the Unknown Brewery got its name, they say on their website:

At The Unknown Brewing Company we are more than just a name. A name does not mean you make good beer, and good beer does not have to have a name. Our job is to stand out. We are the open road with no destination. We are your first kiss or your last time jumping out of an airplane, or whatever your wildest adventure is. We are The Unknown.

Well isn’t that nice. As to the Silverback American Stout, it’s not listed on the brewery website as a year-round or seasonal release. On the can label it says:

Born to be a leader. And defender of the band. This beer is full of flavor and demands to be noticed and respected.

Well. That tells me a lot about the beer. I can tell you that The Unknown Silverback American Stout has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume and was running $10.99 a six-pack at Total Wine where I bought it. That’s a little higher than average these days.

Here goes:

The Unknown Silverback American Stout pours to a jet-black color with a thick towering tan head of foam and an intense nose of dark roasted malt. I had to wait for the foam to settle and then pour little by little; very foamy here. Taking a sip, the beer has more of that intense roasty flavor the nose promised, harsh and astringent with burnt notes of dark chocolate pudding and coffee. The beer finishes very roasty bitter but with some notable grassy hop bitterness as well.

What a wonderful beer! I think it needs just a tad more body to be perfect, and I just love the intense roastiness going on here. I certainly hope this is not a onetime release, but you should know this, Silverback American Stout. If you show your face in a beer store again, you should know that I have a special set of skills. I will find you. And I will drink you.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
