I first sampled the Pumpkin Spice Ale at the RI International Beer Expo in November of 1996, and couldn't believe how good it was. This truly was a slice of pumpkin pie in a glass, heavily spiced with a firm pumpkin character and a deep rich color, it truly pushed the boundaries of what beer can be. Subsequent versions have seemed a bit different to me, more akin to mince pie in the nose than pumpkin pie, but what a beer indeed! Upon the first sip, visions of sugarplums danced in my head as the rich spicy notes of nutmeg, rhubarb, pumpkin, cinnamon, molasses and brown sugar rolled over my tongue. I am a regular at the Union Station Brewpub in Providence, Rhode Island, especially when this beer is on.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
