It was a beautiful spring day, except, well, it wasn’t spring yet. It was late February, though you couldn’t tell by the thermometer. It was 77 degrees outside in the early evening, and being Thursday, I was at Taco Mac. Considering the beautiful weather, I decided to sit out on the patio and enjoy a glass of Unibroue Blanche de Chambly, a perfect beer for spring or at the very least, spring-like weather.
Blanche de Chambly was first brewed in 1992 and was Unibroue’s first beer. At that time, I was about 9 years into my craft beer enthusiasm, and immediately fell in love with Unibroue when they started to export to Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I still love them today and was happy to revisit this old friend.
Unibroue says:
The Blanche de Chambly label features the icon of the city where it is brewed: Fort Chambly. It was converted from a wooden barricade used for fighting against the Iroquois in the middle of the XVII century into a stone fortress to combat the British army at the beginning of the XVIII century. With notes of dried orange peel and coriander seeds, this brew is a worthy representative of classic Belgian-style white wheat beers. To date, it has won more than 34 international medals, including being named “The World’s Best White Beer" on numerous occasions. Unibroue is proud to brew the most popular white beer in Quebec.
Unibroue Blanche De Chambly has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 10 IBUs. I paid $5 for an 11-ounce glass at Taco Mac, and Total Wine sells it for $8.99 a six-pack in bottles or $8.49 for a 750 ML bottle.
My glass of Unibroue Blanche de Chambly arrived a beautiful hazy white color with a light rim of creamy foam. Taking a sip, the beer has tart crisp wheat up front with vibrant citrus and pungent coriander. A hint of banana and perhaps vanilla are here, more subtle than the traditional citrus and coriander. The beer finishes spicy dry and refreshing.
Very well done, one of my very favorite witbiers in the world!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
