Uinta Ready Set Gose

Review Date 6/26/2021 By John Staradumsky

I think it was Steven Wright who said in one of his comedy routines, “If you leave sour cream out on the counter, will it go good?”. Something to that effect. I thought of that when I popped my can of Uinta Ready Set Gose, a beer I think the brewery does not even make anymore. Of course, I didn’t leave this beer out on my counter, I kept it in my garage beer fridge-for quite a while. But the concept is the same, you see: sour cream, sour beer, right? Haven’t they already gone bad?

I exaggerate of course; if I had a choice I would certainly drink an old, unopened sour beer before eating old, unopened sour cream. So it was then that I did drink my can of Uinta Ready, Set, Gose on April 4th of 2021. Mind you, the beer is stamped on the bottom:

BEST BEFORE 08/11/16. EARTH, WIND, & BEER.

So, this beer was over 5 years old (most likely) when I drank it.

There is no longer a listing for this beer on the Uinta website, but I did find this about it on Bevmo.com, which I assume they got from the brewery:

This tart and salty ale smells of fresh lemon rind and coastal sea breezes. Wheat malts give this beer flavors of freshly baked bread and coriander.

My can says the beer has an alcohol content of 4% by volume, which of course I like. Low ABV beers are underrepresented on the American craft beer scene if you ask me, which you did or you would not be reading this. I paid $1.99 for my can (I know this because there is a sticker on it from Total Wine that says $1.99), but Bevmo sold it for $9.99 a six-pack-when they sold it.

Uinta Ready See Gose pours to a pale-yellow orange color with a thick creamy head and a tart nose that is as salty as it is tart. Taking a sip, the beer is medium malty up front, gently crackery, very tart indeed and spicy with drying coriander in the sour finish. It finished spicy, sour and refreshing.

Certainly a beer I would buy again if they ever bring it back. Next time, I’ll try not to wait so long.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
