Accelerator Doublebock Beer

Review Date 7/4/2021  By John Staradumsky

So, have I told you lately how much I love doppelbocks? Very much indeed; they are my favorite style of beer. I get asked all the time by folks I meet, they ask, “Bruguru, what’s your favorite beer??”. Of course they do! It’s a question I explain that I cannot answer since there are so many wonderful beers in the world, it’s like trying to say which of your children is your favorite. I seem to recall Michael Jackson making that comparison.

I was shopping for beer at Craftshack.com, and I spied a new doppelbock (new to me anyway): Two Roads Accelerator Doublebock Beer. Now, I love doppelbocks, and I also love Two Roads, so you know this one was going right into the cart. Two Roads opened its doors in Stratford, Connecticut in 2012, about 11 years after I left New England and moved to Georgia. I was a fan of his beers at New England Brewing Company, and later Southampton Publick House. I first tried Two Roads beers in 2015 on a trip to Rhode Island and Andover, Massachusetts, and brough some home with me to Georgia. I have been a fan ever since.

So, sometime later I hopped on over to the Two Roads website to see what I could learn about Accelerator. I scrolled through the regular offerings from Two Roads, most of which I had tried before. I was at that point quite full of myself when I got to the seasonals and special offerings, most of which I had NOT tried. Sigh. Then too, there was no listing for Accelerator.

Craftshack includes this blurb which is presumably from the brewery:

Accelerator is programmed with generous amounts of toasted German and North American barley that's lightly balanced between toasty dark and lighter spicy malt.

Designed with a robust body, this complex, capable German-style lager delivers a satisfying mouthfeel and floral hops. With it's shimmering deep, copper color - Accelerator is built to satisfy all humankind.

Two Roads Accelerator Doublebock Beer has an alcohol content of 7.2% by volume and I paid $3.79 for my can. Total Wine sells it for $12.99 a six-pack, though not in Georgia. The beer is part of the brewery’s The Road Less Traveled series. Classically, German Doppebocks end with the “-ator” suffix, so Accelerator is the perfect fit for the style and the brewery theme. My can is stamped PKG 02DEC20 and I drank it on June 24th of 2021.

Two Roads Accelerator Doublebock Beer pours to a murky reddish hue with a medium creamy head and a thick, sticky malty melanoidin nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium to full in body with explosive toasty nutty melanoidin goodness. There are hints of chocolate too, and the beer finishes warming with alcohol.

An excellent American doppelbock, and one I will be on the hunt for again.

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
