Wait what? There’s a version of Troegs legendary Troegenator Double Bock Beer Aged in Oak Barrels? Yes, there is, and I was very fortunate indeed to score some from my good buddy Jefferson Evans. Oak Aged Troegenator (not to be confused with Bourbon Barrel Aged Troegenator) is part of the brewery’s Splinter Series of Barrel Aged beers.
Of course, this isn’t your everyday Troegenator, and I mean that in more ways than one. Certainly, the oak barrel ageing adds distinction, but this is a stronger, heartier version of Troegenator as we shall soon see. It is sold in 375ML ML (12.7-ounce bottles) to boot.
From the label:
We age our dense, chewy and captivating Double Bock in oak barrels for over 6 months until ‘Nator emerges with lush overtones of vanilla, oak. And toasted coconut.
Hops are listed as Magnum and German Northern Brewer, the same as straight Troegenator. No malts are given but one assumes they would also be the same: Chocolate, Munich, Pilsner. The base beer here is much stronger, though, the difference to which I spoke earlier. Whereas Troegenator has an alcohol content of 8.2% by volume, it’s been ramped up to a hefty 10.8% here. IBUs are listed at 25.
Troegs Splinter Series Troegenator Doublebock Beer Aged in Oak Barrels pours to a deep mahogany color with a thick creamy head and a ridiculously amazing nose of woody oak and vanilla. I have splinters in my nose just from sniffing. Taking a sip, the beer is immediately thick and rich with an assault of intense toasty nutty, chewy melanoidin goodness. Then there’s vanilla, deep woody oak, a hint of coconut and a warming alcohol, all leading into a slightly sweet finish.
Simply amazing my friends, and a true treasure for a Doppelbock fanatic such as myself. A sipping beer for sure, and not a beer to be missed. And it's Reinheitsgebot compliant! The German beer purity law may regulate what you put in your beer after all, but it does not limit what you can put your beer in.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
