Field Study Summer IPA
Review Date 8/26/2024 By John Staradumsky
This time of year, I find myself gravitating towards lighter and more refreshing beers to combat the oppressive heat. Enter Tröegs Field Study Summer IPA, a seasonal release meant to fulfill just such a purpose. As the last days of summer approach, I thought it a good time to try this beer for the first time.
Tröegs says:
In the hop fields we daydream and study, and at the brewery we tinker and test. For Field Study, dry-hopping delivers notes of ripe grapefruit, mango, pear and melon. Add a backbone of local rustic pale malt, and Field Study is just what we were after: a slightly hazy yet bright summer daydream come true.
Ingredients from the website:
Grain: Oats, Pilsner, Rustic Pale, Wheat
Hops: Citra, Mosaic, El Dorado
Tröegs Field Study Summer IPA has an alcohol content of 6.2% by volume. They do not list an IBU count on the can or their website. How can you not list the IBUs for an IPA? I’m sure I don’t know. I paid $3.49 for my 12-ounce can from Half Time, and Total Wine sells it for $11.49 a six-pack at their Laurel, MD location, though they are out of stock as I type. A better deal can be had at their Milford, CT location, where it is currently in stock in 12-packs for $18.49. My can is stamped FRESHEST BY 07/24/2024. I drank it on August 15th, and the extra few weeks did it no harm.
Tröegs Field Study Summer IPA pours to a hazy yellow color with a thick fluffy white head and a nose of fresh citrusy grapefruit. Taking a sip the beer is medium in body, light to medium actually but very citrusy with grapefruit. I get a bit of melon, too, and at the last just enough hop bitterness to balance.
Could be more bitter in my opinion (perhaps why no IBUs listed?), but balanced and refreshing and I enjoyed it well. I would certainly drink it again.
Glad I tried it? T
Would I rebuy it??
