Recently, I said I had saison fatigue. That may be true, but not because I don’t love saisons-far from it. It’s just that a lot fo the beers being marketed today as saisons don’t have that saison flair, the one you will find in an authentic example of the style like Saison Du Pont or Saison Silly.
I did, however, love Trinity One Ear Naked Saison. One Ear Naked Saison is brewed by the Trinity Brewing Company of Colorado Springs, Colorado, not to be confused with Trinity Brewhouse of Providence, Rhode Island. I darnk many a fine beer at Trinity Brewhouse in the 90s, so I will never confuse the two. Anyway, neither Trinity sells beer in Georgia. I got a bottle of One Ear from Dale Roberts.
From the website:
One Ear is an unspiced 'naked' Saison brewed with barley, oats, and rye. A Free-Rise fermentation develops a light fruit and pepper, while the assertive hoping (SIC) profile creates a dry finish.
Trinity One Ear Naked Saison has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with 35 IBUs. It is a year round selection.
Trinity One Ear Naked Saison pours to a pale-yellow color with a thick foamy head and a soft spicy and funky yeasty nose. Taking a sip, the beer is light and wheaty up front with more funkiness and spicy notes of peppercorn. The oats add soft silkiness and the rye a hint of spice and the hops dry with an oh so subtle grassy bitterness. Overall, the beer is tart, dry, clean of esters and spicy.
Trinity One Ear Naked Saison is the kind of saison I’m always happy to find. It was my favorite saison of the year until Reformation released its amazing Sabine just before I fleshed out this review. If you live in an area where One Ear Naked Saison is sold, buy it. You’d be crazy not to.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
