People's Porter is Sean's strong porter, and weighs in at 6 to 7 percent alcohol by volume. He likened it to an imperial stout-porter, but I wouldn't go that far. The beer has a rich, creamy tan head, is jet black in color and has a smooth chocolatey palate. There are a touch of esters here that seem a little out of place but they only slightly distract from the rich mouthfeel and bittersweet chocolate finish.
This beer is being served side by side with a cask version that has been aged in a 53 gallon Jim Beam barrel for three weeks at about 60 dgerees. The beer is agitated by the pour from the handpump and the whiskey notes really come out in the nose, the beer is lightly carbonated and thinner bodied it seems. The whiskey is not overpowering, it's subtle in the palate but definitely noticeable and works well with the chocolate character of the beer. Strong alcohol notes in the finish as well. Two excellent brews and an interesting comparison of what the aging did for the beer!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
