December 23, 1997:

I recently started a job in Worcester Massachusetts. Worcester also has a Brew City, no relation to the Rhode Island one. And what a difference. I walked in last Thursday and surveyed the taps. Thirty kegs of great beer, I was hard pressed to choose from them.

Having had such a great time there, I stopped back again tonight. I'm glad I did. The Tremont Winter Ale was loaded with nutmeg and a touch of cinnamon on top of a dark Ringwood base beer.

Of course, I needed a meal to complement all of this beer, and the flank steak marinated in Saranac Black Forest, grilled medium rare and served with a heap of caramelized onions, horseradish cream sauce and oven

roasted potatoes filled the bill nicely. Maybe I'll ask my employer if I can work in Worcester a little longer!

This really is a wonderful beer, a rich winter warmer, big and malty, highly alcoholic. I recently posted notes on it:

Dark brown color, huge long-lived tan head, big buttery nose. Explosively flavorful palate is packed with chocolate, raisin, rich toasty-sweet malt, lots of Ringwood diacetyl. Sort of a cross between Geary's Hampshire

and Snow Goose of year's gone by. Really a fantastic beer, perfect to warm the soul on a cold winter evening.

Glad I tried it?  T

Would I rebuy it??
