Since 1993, Atlantic Coast Brewing has been producing English style cask pale ale in Boston. Recently, the company invested more than a million dollars in a new bottling line, making them the only brewery in Boston to brew and bottle there.
Tremont
employs British pale and crystal malts as well as torrified wheat and East
Kent Golding and domestic fuggles hops. Original gravity is given at 1049
with 34 IBUs of bitterness and 3.8% alcohol by volume. The beer pours to a
burnt amber color with a thick porous white head. The nose hints at the
butter-and-toasted-malt notes to come in the palate. These flavors are there
joined by the earthy, crisp characteristics of Ringwood yeast followed by a
credible bitter hop finish. This beer is a first-rate English-style pale
ale, but it strikes me as a virtual clone of Geary's Pale Ale, at least in
the bottle. Thoroughly enjoyable.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
