Tree House Alter Ego IPA! I got a can from my new buddy Andy John. This was my first real Tree House beer, a brewery that I’ve heard lots of great things about. The closest I had come was a can of Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across the World East Meets West IPA, a collaboration brew between California’s Sierra Nevada (the West) and Tree House (the East).
Anyway, when I popped the beer on a fine Sunday afternoon in August, I posted a picture as I am wont to do in that greatest of all Facebook beer groups, Honest Craft Beer Reviews. He asked how I got Tree House, which he said was hard to get back in New England (he is from Rhode Island where I was born and raised). This puzzled me, until I visited the Tree House website.
There, I saw the following about the distribution of Tree House beers:
Currently, the Tree House retail shop (directions here) is the only place you can purchase our beer to take home and enjoy.
Yikes! That made the cans I got from Andy all the more special. Want to find Tree House on tap somewhere? Good luck!
WE ARE NOT CURRENTLY DISTRIBUTING ANY BEER TO DRAFT ACCOUNTS AS WE ARE UNABLE TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND.
Aw heck, OK, they’re not making this easy. How about a pint at the brewery?
In an effort to expedite can sales and maintain a manageable situation for staff and guests, draft pints will only be offered during slower retail times on Wednesday thru Friday.** We do not know if or when this will be in advance. Please follow @treehousebrewco on Twitter to know if pints are being offered on a given day or time - we WILL announce it!
Wow! OK, maybe we’ll just bring some cans home?
ONCE OUR RETAIL HOURS BEGIN WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THESE BEERS WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN YOU ARRIVE! New cans may become available throughout the day. LIMITS MAY BE ADJUSTED AT ANY TIME. FOLLOW @treehousebrewco on Twitter for real time updates. ALL LIMITS POSTED ARE PER PERSON, PER DAY. NO SECOND TRIPS THROUGH THE LINE. This includes if and when new beers become available throughout the day.
It is an amazing thing when you can create this kind of demand for your beer, and don’t have to rely on distributors and retailers. It makes my can of Alter Ego IPA all the more special. Thanks again Andy!
Tree House says on the can label:
We are excited that you are holding Tree House Brewing Company’s twin brother to Julius, Alter Ego! Alter Ego builds upon Julius with juicy citrus & tropical fruit flavors and aromas as a result of an intense Mosaic & Amarillo dry hop. Alter ego is the result of our uncompromising dedication to fresh, progressive, & delightful beer. We hope you enjoy it with laughter, good cheer, and in the company of those you love.
Tree House Alter Ego IPA has an alcohol content of 6.8% by volume. My can is stamped on the bottle with a packaging date of 7/03/18 and TROY ANTIPASTO.
Tree House Alter Ego IPA pours to a very hazy yellow orange color with a thick rocky head of foam and a luscious nose of pineapple, orange and grapefruit rind. Taking a sip, the beer has a smooth moderate maltiness as the style often delivers with incredible juicy notes of orange fruit and rind and a hint of tropical pineapple. A hint of resin comes through, too, and the beer finishes with a zesty herbal bitterness that is slightly minty.
Excellent! I am truly indebted to Andy for this and the can of Doppelganger DIPA he sent. I am looking forward to cracking that one tomorrow and will be back with more details shortly.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
