Here’s a beer I really enjoyed: Three Taverns Hop Leaf Project Supernal IPA. I got this beauty at Stout’s Growlers in what I was told the largest ever crowler purchase there. In total, I bought 11 crowlers:
Scofflaw Westside (Crowler) × 2
Fannin Brewery Toccoa Brown
Grumpy Old Men Moon Over Blue Ridge
Three Taverns Hop Leaf Project: Supernal × 2
Creature Comforts Reclaimed Rise × 2
Creature Comforts Koko Buni × 2
Creature Comforts Athena Paradiso
Before you get too excited, I’ll mention that I didn’t drink them all. No, two of them were for me and Jeff Evans to drink when we got back from Taco Mac, and the rest went back with him for friends in D.C. Still, the Stouts folks seemed happy with the sail. I was happy one of the Crowlers I picked out for me and Jeff was Three Taverns Hop Leaf Project Supernal IPA.
From the website, more on the Hop Leaf Project:
The Hop Leaf Project is a limited release series of experimental beers allowing our team of brewers to explore the way different aromatic and flavorful hop combinations work together with different malt bills to bring out a variety of character in hop-forward beers. This project is designed to release a new beer to market every four to six weeks, primarily draft-only with an occasional limited number of cans released from the brewery.
And here’s what they say about Supernal IPA:
Supernal uses raw wheat and oats along with pale and pilsner malts for a brew that enters the glass a yellow straw color with little visibility. Double dry hopped with Mosaic, Hallertau Huell Melon and Hallertau blanc, this luscious IPA unleashes a barrage of aroma and flavor that includes citrus, orange, ripe melon and pineapple. With a lingering signature hop presence and low bitterness, the soft mouthfeel makes this a super drinkable IPA.
Three Taverns Hop Leaf Project Supernal IPA has an alcohol content of 6.5% by volume with 35 IBUs. I paid $10 for a 32-ounce crowler at Stouts. This is one of those so-called “New England IPAs” that are unfiltered and hazy.
Three Taverns Hop Leaf Project Supernal IPA pours to a hazy orange color with a very minimal head formation and juicy grapefruit and herbal notes in the nose. Taking a sip I get a little malt but more bright citrusy goodness, grapefruit and a hint of orange, then deep green leafy notes, spearmint to my taste, and a dry herbal minty finish. I think I’d like more malt, but hey, that’s me. I always want more malt. I do love the herbal minty hop notes here, they really permeate the beer and make it just a bit different. Yes, I would drink that again friends. You should too.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
