So, you know, I’m really fond of Decatur, Georgia’s new Three Taverns brewery, and I haven’t met a beer from them I didn’t like. They specialize in Belgian-style beers, and sell their brew in bottles and draft throughout Georgia. I see them often at my local Taco Mac here in Canton.
The latest specialty from Three Taverns is Pils Mundial (World Pils), which they described on their facebook page as follows:
This week marks the official release of Pils Mundial, a Euro-style pilsner to commemorate the World Cup (Copa Mundial). Dry hopped with Falconers Flight 7c's for an added American edge, this special edition beer and glass will be served at bars televising the games throughout World Cup.
This was in early June when the beer was launched; I enjoyed it on tap a few weeks later. I paid $6 for a mug of this 5.3% ABV beer. Here are my honest opinions:
Three Taverns Pils Mundial, a Euro pils but they ruined it with passion fruity American hops. Dry hopped with Falconers Flight. OK, I should not say ruined it, it is tasty with crisp biscuit malt, zesty passion fruit and peach fruit and a grassy, herbal very bitter buzz of a finish. I just don't like fruit in my pilsner.
I enjoyed my mug of Three Taverns Pils Mundial, but it’s not something I would buy again. I was looking for a pilsner, and while the base of that was there, those fruity hops made it taste like a “session IPA” (though a less hoppy one), and there are enough of those already. American brewers, please don’t do to pilsners what’s been done to IPAs.
A decent beer, but it just didn’t work for me.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
