Black Portent Porter

How long will a crowler keep? That’s a good question. The longest I’ve held one is, I think, a few months, and I just did that again with Black Portent, an American porter from Three Taverns brewery here in Atlanta. I bought it on May 13th and, of course, all my crowlers go straight into the refrigerator, on the top shelf to the back, where it is coldest. I have at this time a full-sized garage fridge and two large dorm fridges full of beer, so my wife gets a little annoyed when I put beer in the kitchen fridge. That prohibition, however, does not seem to apply to crowlers. I have no idea why not, but hey, I’m not complaining.

I was in the mood for draft beer on July 10th and having just picked up some new crowlers from Stouts here in Canton, I figured I needed to drink the Black Portent first. I love Three Taverns, they are now with the demise of Jailhouse my favorite Georgia brewery, closely followed by Reformation and Sweetwater. Here is what they say about Black Portent:

Black Portent is a hearty American Porter, rich in toffee, caramel, and chocolate malt character. Incredibly smooth and drinkable, this beer quickly begs for another glass.

I can attest to the latter statement about Black Portent; I certainly wanted a second glass after the first. Works out nicely that a crowler holds two pints, then, doesn’t it?

Three Taverns Black Portent has an alcohol content of 5% by volume. I paid $9.25 for my crowler from Stouts and Total Wine sells it for $10.99 a six-pack.

Three Taverns Black Portent pours to a dark black (but not opaque) color with a thick creamy head and a rich roasty nose. Taking a sip, the beer is medium in body with notes of caramel, dark chocolate, and rich roast. It finishes dry roasty and delicious.

Three Taverns Black Portent is a straightforward, uncomplicated robust porter. In these days of fruit loopy IPAs, soda pop sours and pastry stouts, it’s nice to have a beer that’s just a, well, beer. Would that more brewers got back to the basics, if only now and again. Thanks Three Taverns!

And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
