Yes, you heard it right. Three Stooges Beer is brewed
at the Lion in Wilkes-Barre, PA by the legendary Panther Brewing Company
(who presumably had their brewery destroyed by the Stooges and thus have
switched to contract brewing). Now, I usually buy a new beer any time I see
one, but I'm sure if that weren't the case I would have grabbed this one for
the label alone. Moe, Larry, and Curly, are prominently featured above the
caption, "We all put the yeast in". Who can resist? Crown cap collectors
will be equally delighted with the portraits of one of the Stooges (Moe,
Larry, Curly, or Shemp) on the caps.
Brewed using the unique "Slowly I turn" process, Three Stooges Beer is
actually pretty good, a light golden lager with a smooth malt body, a touch
of corn and a slightly sweetish (but not overly so) finish. The beer is
rather refreshing and makes for a great quencher in hot weather. A little
more hops in the finish would be nice, but this is still a very enjoyable
brew, certainly superior to anything Moe, Larry, and Curly could have brewed
at home. As the label says, raise a glass.... "For Duty and Humanity"!
But wait. There's more. Evidently, Light beer wasn't developed in the
seventies as we all thought, but dates back to the thirties, when the
Stooges all put the yeast into the first batch. Curly's Light, also from
Panther Brewing, is a very pale, very light, very refreshing beer with just
a bit of fizz and corn flavor to it. The ultimate session beer, I was
actually a bit more sober after drinking it then when I started.
Can Shempen Ale be far behind? I recommend both of these beers with Southern
Comforter cake, can-stuffed turkey, or a good pie fight.
And remember, try a new beer today, and
drink outside the box.
