One thing I like about 3 Floyds Yum Yum American Session Ale right off the bat: they don’t call it a session IPA. I’m a stickler for that session thing and hold brewers to the classical English definition of 4% ABV or lower. And while Yum Yum American Session Ale doesn’t make the cut by that criteria, at least they’re not pretending it’s an India Pale Ale.
Instead, they just call it an American Session Ale. I think it’s an American Pale Ale, but what do I know? I’ve only been drinking craft beer since the early 80s. Whatever you call it, though, Yum Yum American Session Ale is just another example of how 3 Floyds always seems to get it right.
From the label, which has a really weird font that’s hard to read:
Welcome to flavor country. This Pale Ale has just the right malt backbone to support an explosive juicy hop profile. Derived from a new blend of proprietary hops. We hope you’ll enjoy it. Cheers!
3 Floyds Yum Yum American Session Ale has an alcohol content of 5.5% by volume with 63 IBUs. I don’t know what it costs as its not sold locally; I got my bottle from my beer brother from another mother Dave Coulter. My bottle was packaged on 4-4-16 and I drank it in early June. Very fresh.
3 Floyds Yum Yum American Session Ale pours to a pale orange amber color with a moderate head of creamy foam and an inviting nose of citrus fruits and grassy herbal hops. A light layer of Brussels lace forms on the sides of my glass and follows the liquid to the bottom. Taking a sip, the beer has malt up front! Chewy caramel malt to be exact, then it has hops! Hugely grassy, herbal, citrus lemon rind hops to be exact. The beer finishes bitter and herbal and really makes you want another sip.
What a truly AWESOME American Pale Ale. I really miss 3 Floyds beers in Georgia (they were sold here years ago) and beers like this are a good reason why. This is a beer you could just sip on all day and never get tired of. If you can get it in your area, you’d better just do that. You’ll be saying Yum Yum! Just like I did.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
