Terrapin Raspberry Truffle Wake n Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout! Doesn’t that sound delicious? The words aren’t even out of my mouth and I’m drooling. But here’s the thing. I saw this in the store for $12-for a single half liter bottle! While this beer, which Terrapin calls a Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout brewed with Coffee, Raspberries, and Chocolate sounds sooo good, it didn’t sound $12 for a half liter bottle good. Sorry. I refuse to be ripped off.
Taco Mac to the rescue! There I was at Taco Mac one night in late July, and they had it on tap. OK, it was an 11-ounce pour, but just five bucks! Think about that for a minute. In the bottle, Terrapin Raspberry Truffle Wake n Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout would have cost me 71 cents per ounce. A lot for a bottled beer. But on tap, it was a mere 45 cents per ounce. You know I was all over that like a cheap suit.
On their website, Terrapin says:
Our 2017 Reserve Series continues with Raspberry Truffle W-n-B. Brweed with pure liquid cacao, raspberry, and coffee from Jittery Joe’s, this delectable Imperial Stout is a dessert lover’s dream come true.
Pair with: Triple Creme & Brie, or with a piece of coconut cake to finish off your evening.
Taco Mac didn’t have any Triple Crème & Brie, or coconut cake for that matter. No worries. I just drank the beer for dessert. And what a fine dessert it was.
Ingredients from the website:
HOPS: Nugget
MALTS: 2-Row, Dark Crystal, Barley, Oats, Chocolate, Black, Roasted Barley
Terrapin Raspberry Truffle Wake n Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout has an alcohol content of 9.4% by volume with 50 IBUs. The brewery website says this is a specialty December release. I drank it in July. Was this an old keg? Perhaps saved for Christmas in July? I can tell you that whatever the case the beer was, as the French say, magnifique!
My glass of Terrapin Raspberry Truffle Wake n Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout arrived jet black in color with a light filmy head and robust coffee grinds and bright fruit in the nose. Taking a sip, the beer has a smooth and rich roasty palate (could be a bit fuller in body perhaps) with explosive raspberry fruit, milk chocolate, coffee grinds, chocolate covered raspberries and roast in the finish.
This beer just explodes with flavor, the bright raspberry fruit really popping against the smooth silky oat texture and the chocolate and coffee. This was the best five bucks I’ve spent in a while. On it’s own merits, a solid four and a half star beer, less a full star for the crazy bottle price but adding back a half star for the very reasonable draft.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
