Ah, beer and football. What’s better than that? For my part, I always look forward to September and the start of a new football season. And while I may be a New England transplant and never miss a Patriots game, I also pull for the home team, the Atlanta Falcons. Unless, of course, they’re playing the Pats. Anyway, in the theme of football and beer, I was delighted to see that Terrapin Beer Company of Athens has a brew that rolls both into one neat little package (or glass if you prefer): Terrapin Hammer 58 Pale Ale.
I’ll let Terrapin give you the background on this beer, since there’s quite a bit of background to give.
To celebrate the inaugural season for the Falcons at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in collaboration with Jessie “The Hammer” Tuggle, former NFL Falcon, Terrapin Beer Co has created Hammer 58, a pale ale brewed with Falconers Flight hop blend, clocking in at 5.8% ABV. Originally brewed at the ATL BrewLab with Tuggle, the beer will be available to kick off the Falcon’s regular season game schedule.
The beer will be available on draft at several locations including the stadium, select Taco Mac locations, The Wing, Terrapin Beer Co’s brewery in Athens, and for a limited time at the Terrapin Taproom at Suntrust Park.
Pretty neat, huh? They already told you that the beer is brewed with Falconer’s Flight hops, and that’s a nice touch, as are the 5.8% ABV and 58 IBUs. This is a draft-only specialty, only available for football season, too. As you look at the locations where its available above, can you guess where I had it? You got it! Taco mac, here in Canton. As tasty as the beer was, the price was nice too at just $4.50 for a 23-ounce mug.
Oh, before I forget, the malts used are:
MALTS: 2-row, Wheat, Flaked barley, Carapilsner, Crystal 65*L
My mug of Terrapin Hammer 58 Pale Ale arrived a bright golden orange color with a thick creamy head and a robust tropical fruity nose. Taking a sip I got a medium maltiness appropriate to the style with fruity tropical pineapple and citrusy grapefruit peel and pith all rounded out by a long dry bitter finish.
A tasty, drinkable pale ale perfect for sipping during an afternoon of football. Worthy of 4 stars on its own merits, but I’ll add another half star in recognition of the football theme and the bargain price. It’s so rare to get a craft beer on draft for under $5 these days!
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
