Where is the year going? That’s what I would like to know. Already, it’s March and when that’s over 2018 will be 25% done. On the plus side, a new month brings with it a new beers of the month at taco mac, and this time beers from Terrapin Brewing of Athens, Georgia are featured. The first one I’m enjoying is Terrapin Golden Ale, a cream ale sold only in Georgia.
Cream ales, of course, are an American creation not unlike the German Kolsch style in their production. Warm fermented with ale yeast, they are cold-conditioned like lagers, and thus are a hybrid style. American cream ales often use corn as an ingredient (never happen with a German Kolsch) though Terrapin does not. This is my first time sampling Terrapin Golden Ale.
From the website:
Only available in Georgia. A balanced malt profile, subtly grassy aroma and low bitterness make this beer a hometown favorite.
Ingredients from the website:
HOPS: Cascade, Mt. Hood
MALTS: 2-Row Pale, Munich, Malted Wheat, Flaked Barley
Terrapin Golden Ale has an alcohol content of 5.3% by volume with 18 IBUs. I paid $7.12 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac and runs $8.99 a six-pack in cans. I go a free Terrapin logo glass with my purchase at Taco Mac.
My mug of Terrapin Golden Ale arrived a bright, well, golden color with a medium head of creamy foam and a soft bready malt nose. Taking a sip, the beer has fresh biscuity malt in the palate and is smooth and creamy in texture, is clean and refreshing, and ends with a gentle grassy bitter finish.
A decent example of the style at a fair price. Served nicely to wash down a slit order of Gochujang and Sweet Chili Sesame Wings.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
