Terrapin Chopsecutioner Bat Wood Aged IPA! That’s what I was having. Chopsecutioner, of course, is a variation on Terrapin Hopsecutioner IPA, but a bit lower in alcohol and as the name implies wood aged. I adore wood aged IPAs. The original IPAs that sailed from Burton to Bombay would have certainly had a woody character from the casks in which they were shipped.
For March of 2018, Terrapin beers are featured as beers of the month, and that meant when I ordered a pint of Chopsecutioner on a Thursday night I got a free logo glass. With baseball season almost upon us, it seemed the perfect beer to accompany my wings (but where are the hot dogs on the menu?). Swing batter!
Terrapin says on their website:
A session version of our flagship brand Hopsecutioner aged on Mizuno bat chips. Bright copper in color with grapefruit, citrus and papaya aromatics plus a subtle oak character. A light, crackery malt sweetness brings balance to a pleasant hop bite, while light bodied effervescence and grapefruit pith dryness make for the perfect warm-weather session brew. Chopsecutioner – it’s not Hopsecutioner, but it’s in the Ballpark!
Ingredients, also from the website:
HOPS: Warrior, Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo (and Cascade)
MALTS: 2-Row Silo, Munich, Victory, Pale Crystal
Terrapin Chopsecutioner Bat Wood Aged IPA has an alcohol content of 5% by volume with 60 IBUs. I paid $6.12 for a 23-ounce mug at Taco Mac (with a free glass), and Target sells it for $9.49 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans.
My mug of Terrapin Chopsecutioner Bat Wood Aged IPA arrived a beautiful translucent golden orange color with a soft fruity nose. Taking a sip the beer has a thin malty palate with subtle citrusy grapefruit zest and hints of oak leading into a balanced finish.
This is a tasty session beer indeed and the wood ageing adds an interesting element. It is indeed perfect for warm weather, and after enjoying one will have you shouting “batter up!” for another.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
