What was I thinking? There I was at Taco Mac on March 12th, Sweetwater beers were featured as beer of the month, and I was thinking to myself, “Self, haven’t I had Sweetwater Hatchery Series # 1: Mosaic IPA before? It wasn’t lone before I realized that no, of course I hadn’t, as this is a new release from Sweetwater. I was actually thinking of Terrapin Single Hopped Mosaic Red Rye Ale. Don’t ask me why.
Anyway,
Hatchery Series #1: Mosaic IPA is the first widely distributed beer in the
series, but it isn’t the first Hatchery beer. In an e-mail about their
Hatchery beers Sweetwater says:
Special experimental brews from our pilot system, The Hatchery,
only available on tap at the brewery during our tours... til they run out:
Hatchery Saison
Mint Session Stout
Baby Face Pale Ale
About the Mosaic IPA in particular Sweetwater says:
“We chose the mind-blowing Mosaic Hop and a simple grain bill; decided on a hefty late hop addition and a generous dry hop schedule – all to be st showcase the flavor and aroma. The result is a light, crushable, moderately bitter brew for hopheads like us.”
Sweetwater Hatchery Series # 1: Mosaic IPA has an alcohol content of 6.4% by volume and I paid $5.50 for a 20-ounce mug at Taco Mac.
My mug of Sweetwater Hatchery Series Mosaic IPA arrived a bright orange color with a medium-sized head of foam and an abundance of passion fruit, papaya and melon in the nose. Taking a sip, there’s medium malt up front and more of the same hoppy fruity flavors plus some citrus and a balancing hop bitterness.
A decent and tasty single hop ale, and I would buy it again-if it’s offered again. Already, Sweetwater is on to Hatchery Series #2.
And remember, try a new beer today, and drink outside the box.
